Brownsville

Dancing Thru Life exists to help economically disadvantaged youth succeed in life through dance. The program currently partners with the Brownsville Independent School District to provide dance instruction 3 times a week to over 1,000 students on 46 campuses. At the end of the year, the students participate in their own competition, a highly publicized local event, and the winners have the opportunity to travel to a full competition with Fred Astaire Dance Studios.

In an area that is 98% low-income, it would be impossible for these kids to dance without financial assistance. The program pays for their ballroom shoes, competition gowns and suits, and travel expenses, not to mention top-notch dance instruction.

Dancing is unique in that it is both a fine art and a sport. These kids learn confidence, good manners, social skils, and communication, as well as a physical fitness and a healthy lifestyle. Far from just a pleasurable activity, dancing is also a marketable skill that can help them succeed in life, whatever career they pursue.
